Even before I had kids I liked the children’s cartoon show
Arthur. Ok, maybe that’s a weird think to admit, but I really have liked the show for a long time. Since coming into the adoption world I learned that there was once an
Arthur episode that included a statement about “real parents” that created a bit of an uproar in the adoptive parent community. Today, however,
Arthur is redeeming itself with a two part show that celebrates adoption.
“Big Brother Binky, parts one and two” will follow Binky’s experiences as his new baby sister comes home from China. Binky is an only child who learns to welcome home and love his newly adopted sister, although it’s not a totally easy transition for him. After reading Adoptive Family Magazine’s review of the episodes, I feel confident that the “Big Brother Binky” shows will be wonderful for our kids to watch, and (maybe even moreso,) extremely educational to a wide group of kids who may not know a thing about adoption.

The writers and producers of the show spent a great deal of time researching adoption in an effort to use the proper language and paint an accurate picture of international adoption. These shows could even wind up being a useful educational tool in elementary school classrooms when teaching about adoption. I love the fact that Ella will be able to watch a mainstream show that all the other kids watch that’s about international adoption! And international adoption presented in a normal, realistic light at that. I’m excited to watch!
It will likely air at different times depending on where you are in the country and your local PBS channel, so check this
link to find out when you can watch it. I hope you’ll watch, and if you do get to tune in, let me know what you think.
