While digging around online, I came across a few events this month that I thought would be of interest to those of us with Vietnamese kids (or those in the process of adopting.) The art exhibits are on the west coast, but we can all tune in our radio to learn more about Operation Babylift. If you know of any events that would interest readers, please don’t hesitate to share
Operation Babylift Radio Program – Lana Noone will be interviewed on October 24th at 11:00 am about Viet Nam’s Operation Babylift. Operation Babylift took place in 1975 when over 2000 children were evacuated out of war torn Viet Nam to be adopted by families world wide. Her interview will be part of the “It’s Boomer Time” program on station WNYH, 740 AM. Lana is a mom who has made it her mission to honor her daughter Heather’s life by sharing the story of Operation Babylift and ensuring that the world never forgets that moment in time, the people that were involved in the effort nor her much loved daughter, who came home during the Babylift. You can visit Lana’s web site here.
Art Exhibits by Vietnamese-American Artists – The work of Dinh Q. Le will be shown at the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, Washington through December 30th. Le is a young artist who has taken his craft in a unique direction: photo weaving. He weaves strips of photographs of the Viet Nam-American war along with pop art photographs to create works of art that signify his personal struggle feeling torn between two cultures and not totally fitting into either. You can view some examples of his work here.
An-My Le’s photographs of the Viet Nam-American war will be shown at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, Washington through November 4th. Her ‘Small Wars’ series of photographs on display were taken during a war reenactment that took place in Virginia. The ’29 Palms’ photographs were taken at a current American military training base. She uses her work to explore the war in Viet Nam with the current war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
