It’s exciting to see that National Adoption Awareness Month is being promoted nationwide. I have seen advertisements in my local newspaper, invitations to events being held by local adoption agencies, commercials on television and banners on various websites. Earlier today I was online and noticed a side banner for a series of documentaries on adoption produced by the Hallmark Channel. I was interested, so I clicked on it and wouldn’t you know it; they had
an episode about a couple who adopted from Viet Nam.
Using positive, uplifting stories to spread awareness about adoption is a wonderful thing in my book. I just watched the Viet Nam documentary and was so touched by it. Seeing the sights and hearing the sounds of Viet Nam, and above all else, the faces of the children makes me want to run right back there. I’m not so sure how well I’m going to hold up during this wait for our second adoption from Viet Nam!

The video follows the story of a couple who decide to adopt from Viet Nam following many years of unsuccessful infertility treatments. They worked with Adoptions From The Heart adoption agency and one of their facilitators was a Viet Nam veteran. Hearing his story and how he got involved in Vietnamese adoptions and how he is now “creating families instead of destroying them” was incredibly touching.
The story is told at an easy to follow pace and is very well done. There are a few disclaimers I need to throw out, though. The family’s adoption and this documentary were done five or six years ago, and there have been many changes since then. So when they discuss time frames, cost and logistics, bear in mind that this was the information from many years ago and is likely no longer the case. But overall I would highly recommend watching this clip and sharing it with others. It would be especially beneficial for those family members and friends who are brand new to the world of adoption and are curious about this journey that your family is embarking on.
If you’re feeling anything like I was while watching it, have some tissues handy!
