  • A new helmet law has been passed in Viet Nam requiring the wearing of a helmet when on a motorbike. Annual governmental reports state that traffic accidents in the country result in approximately 13,000 fatalities (half of which are caused by brain injuries) and 11,000 injuries. I cringe to think that I zipped around Hanoi without a helmet!

    The government’s Resolution 32 states that all motorbike riders (drivers and passengers) must be wearing a protective helmet. The resolution went into effect on December 15th and will be enforced on every road in the country. Those not complying with the new resolution are being issued fines by local police.

  • Internet censorship is getting tougher in Viet Nam. I've read blogs of parents who traveled recently and were unable to access their blogspot or wordpress blog page in Viet Nam. Check with families traveling before you to see if they had any trouble in the hotel or nearby internet cafe.



  • There's a new high speed North-South sea route in Viet Nam. The Hoa Sen, a ship that holds 1000 passengers and half the number of cars can travel from Quang Ninh province in the North to Ho Chi Minh City in the South in forty eight hours.


  • The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention sponsored an HIV/AIDS seminar in Hanoi this week. The Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control and the Hanoi School of Public Health were involved in the event, whose focus was on care and treatment. One of the goals of the seminar was to develop a plan to implement, sustain and improve the quality of HIV/AIDS programs in Viet Nam.
