Our Tet Trung Thu Mooncakes

Please believe me when I tell you that, yes, I am completely and thoroughly aware that these look nothing like traditional mooncakes! As a time strapped mom who wanted to make them myself, this is what I concocted and we were all pretty happy with them. I followed the Asia for Kids recipe that I posted about here, and the directions were really easy to follow and the ingredients were all things we normally have on hand (except for the “fancy” blackberry preserves I purchased just for this occasion.)

I am pleased to tell you that these were some of the most delicious treats that I have ever eaten. My calorie count for the day was not pleased, but I’m just going to ignore that for right now ;) They tasted like a mix between spritz cookies and thumbprint cookies~so yummy! Miss Ella has a cold so because I feel sorry for her little runny eyed, runny nosed self, she’s had way too many ‘moons’ as she calls them.

As I had written about before, the Mid-Autumn Moon Fesitval (Tet Trung Thu) is a holiday that honors the moon and our children. Taking the time to pay some respects to our universe way out there and our loved ones right here with us is a wonderful tradition. I think that Tet Trung Thu will become a day of stepping back and realizing what we have been given, and will serve as a reminder to be grateful for our children and our families.

Has anyone out there ever made their own traditional mooncakes before? They are just so gorgeous and one day I aspire to do so. Did you do anything special for the festival? If so, please share; I’d love to hear about how you spent your Tet Trung Thu.

The molds are really neat. I'm planning to purchase a couple. However, we're not planning on ever making traditional mooncakes. Too much work! I might use them to mold mashed potatoes tho.

Your "moons" look really tasty. Hope that Ella feels better soon.
