After you receive your referral and send in your acceptance paperwork, everything in your world will change. You are no longer “adopting a child.” You are now adopting a specific child who has a name and a story and an adorable face and you can’t get to them for months. I remember that wait and it was not easy, but as you continue to wait for what seems like an endless period of time, try and focus on using your time constructively. I know, I know – easier said than done, but having something else to focus on really can help.

Based on the feedback of transracial adoptees living in the US, it is extremely important to provide your child with opportunities to interact with members of their race. It would also be great to interact with other transracial families and other adoptees. Depending on where you live, this may be easier for some than others, but it is certainly possible.

While you wait, take some time to familiarize yourself with your community. Break out of your comfort zone and talk to strangers, ask questions and join groups. Here are some ideas:

  • There are many Families With Children From Vietnam (FCVN) across the country, and you can join yours even before your child comes home. Some Families With Children From China (FCC) groups have expanded to become Families With Children From China and Asia.
  • If you have friend or family members with young children, ask them about playgroups and family activities. You will be so busy once you’re home that doing this legwork now will be a great timesaver.

  • Are there Asian doctors, dentists or day care providers in your town? Consider using their services for your family.

  • Scour the internet for adoption groups in your area. You can also ask your social worker or adoption agency for the names of other transracial adoptive families in your area. Reach out to them and plan to have your children play once you’re home and settled.
