When I first started seriously considering adoption I presented it to my husband by telling him it was something I wanted to discuss, asking him to think about it and let me know when he wanted to talk. I gave him some time and we eventually started to have some heart to hearts about our desire to add to our family and the world of adoption as a whole. He was open to it from the start and has become more and more an advocate for adoption as the years have passed. Now that he has the official title of Ella’s Daddy, forget about it! This man, who was completely on board our adoption journey the entire way knows first hand the joys of adoption and the amazing connection that he has with his baby girl.
It melts my heart to see what having a daughter has done to and for my husband. There have been many blog posts, magazine articles and book chapters addressing the “reluctant husband” who isn’t fully on board with adopting a child and takes a back seat while the wife does all the work and research for their adoption process. While, I admit, I handle most of the paperwork, it’s not because Steve took or is taking a passive role in our adoptions. He speaks openly about our adoption of Ella and how amazing it really is that we are now able to spend our lives together. He is an advocate for ethical adoptions and transracial families. He is such a non-reluctant husband that I couldn’t even imagine our lives and relationship any other way. He is just as excited as I am to adopt again, and I’m sure that has everything to do with the close relationship he has with Ella and is eager to build the same with our next child.

So today’s a day of thanks, and a Love Thursday as well, so today (as everyday) I want to share my huge thanks and love for my husband, the father of my children and partner in life. We had no idea that we would wind up here, but I’m glad that we have together.
