Listening to and Learning From Adoptees

During our home study update visit a few weeks ago, our social worker touched on a few subjects that continue to stand out in my mind. I respect the fact that she keeps current on adoption issues; attending conferences, classes and seminars, reading new material and speaking with all involved in adoption. So when she talks about adoption related issues, I listen. One of the points that she made was about the importance of listening to adoptees. She was sharing her excitement over the advantage that adoptive parents have today thanks to the adult adoptees who are sharing their stories. Through their experiences we can gain an insight into raising our own children.

Since joining the blogging world and reading many blogs of adult adoptees, I have learned so much about their experiences and points of view. You’ll find opinions that you don’t agree with and angry people who are vehemently anti-adoption, but I find that blogs and websites of that vein just help me to think a little deeper and sort out my own beliefs.

Some adoptive parents find it uncomfortable to venture into the world of the adult adoptee, but I think it is extremely valuable and can only help us raise our children and teach them the navigation skills they’ll need through life. A great place to start is our own Adoptee blog here on adoptionblogs.com. Awhile back, Erin posted a valuable link to an amazing essay written by a teenage adoptee here. Since I am not an adoptee, I will never be able to understand what my child is going through in terms of her having been adopted. I feel that it’s my job to learn as much as I can to be the best parent to her that I can, and learning from and listening to adoptees has been extremely helpful to me as I learn and grow as a mom.

I'm an adoptee and an adoptive parent. The danger for me is thinking I know everything about DD's experience based on my experiences. I make it a point to get other views. Not always an easy thing, but there it is.
