Six months. We have been a family for longer, but home only six months. It seems unreal because it feels like Miss Ella has always been here. I remember the time without her, but she has changed our lives so drastically that I feel like she’s been home forever.
Our hotel room in Viet Nam was mostly comprised of our huge bed, so Ella spent most of her time on there. She would army crawl around, but we didn’t know if she could actually crawl or not, due to lack of floor time. Well, as soon as we got back home and entered our house we put her on the floor and she took off! It was the funniest thing – I guess she knew how to crawl all along but wasn’t given the opportunity. And now, six months later, we have a toddling girl who loves to walk and climb and bounce and dance and much prefers any kind of movement to being still.
In six months she has grown a mouth full of teeth, has shown us just how much she absolutely loves all kinds of food, has gained weight and inches and has gotten used to being admired and doted upon by family, friends and complete strangers. One day about a month ago, Ella and I went to see her daddy at the high school where he works. He was directing the school’s musical so we went into the theatre. Miss Ella let go of our hands, made her way to the center of the stage, looked out at the audience, splayed her arms out and made a huge cheese face at the “crowd”. She has arrived and she knows it!
She has arrived and has brought so much happiness with her. Our little family has strengthened and blossomed with her in it. I knew I loved her from the start, but there are days when I am just amazed at how deep that attachment and bond has grown. Starting off parenting with a six month old is like hitting the ground running and I feel like I’m just starting to catch up
Of course, we’re still learning as we go, but I feel that we have learned and accomplished so much in these past six months. I can’t wait for the next six.
