We are pretty much officially in our transitional home for however long it takes us to find our new home. Luckily, the home comes complete with a grandma, grandpa, great grandma and lots of cat cousins to love. Our house is still on the market, but hopefully that won't be the case for much longer. Ella’s been doing extremely well and really loves all the extra attention that is being lavished upon her. We’re also settled in a wooded area, and she loves sticks and rocks and dirt, so she’s pretty much in her glory.

We’ve been here a little over a week and although this is the town that I grew up in and I still know many people here, I haven’t lived here with my transracial family before. It’s not the most diverse area, and we previously lived in a town full of diversity where I saw transracial families while out and about regularly. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but have experienced nothing but kind remarks and friendly strangers.

While buying new pillows the cashier asked me if Ella was adopted and went on to tell me about a member of her family with a daughter from Korea who just took a trip with her parents back to her birth country. She was one of the most appropriate people that I have spoken with about adoption, and I am sure it’s because her family has been touched by adoption. I have been asked what country she is from, but that’s been the extent of the questions so far. Mostly, she just gets compliments and I get regular mommy banter about age, development milestones and questions about whether or not she still takes a bottle. Many of these mommy interactions are actually prompted by Ella who has taken to pointing and yelling “Baby!” every time she sees another child :)

All in all, I think living here is going to be a good experience for all of us. I really think that these months will foster relationships between Ella and her grandparents and great grandma that will be lasting. Now if we could just get our house to sell, we'd be set!

Rebecca: Oh how we understand. We lived in a transition house for 10 months waiting for our house to get finished and the contractor never finished it. So, now we are living in an apartment for 6 months and in the meantime looking for a house. We want to be in our house before we go to VietNam to pick up daughters. Just hold on, it will all go well especially with family. I hope you find the home of your dreams and that you get settled in real soon. Keep me posted.
