There are so many names for such a special day: Family Day, Adoption Day, Gotcha Day, Forever Family Day, and I’m sure there are many more that I’m just not thinking of right now. Regardless of what you may call it in your family, the anniversary of the day that you adopted your child is an important, personal holiday.
As you may know, we celebrated our first Family Day yesterday and what a lovely day it was. It was nice to make a little fuss over the fact that we officially became a family a year ago to the date. We had a special dinner and a gift for Ella, but mostly, it was just nice to reflect and spend some quality time together.
There are many things that your family may wish to do to celebrate your Family Days, and here are some ideas:
- Spend time going through photo albums and scrapbooks and watching family videos. If you have footage of your time spent in country or of your first meeting, this would be the perfect time to watch them together.

Make a special or favorite meal to share as a family. I think ice cream sundaes for dinner would make a Family Day to remember :) Also, planning a meal, shopping for ingredients and cooking together could be fun depending on the age of your kids.
Visit a Vietnamese restaurant and enjoy the foods of your child’s birth country.
Work on a craft project or house project as a family, but make it something fun. Now’s not necessarily the time to reorganize the garage. But planting flowers or a small tree would be a great family activity.
Consider letting the Family Day honoree have decision making and veto power on activities for the day.
Create traditions; if every Family Day involves going to the movies, sharing a pizza, visiting a certain restaurant or playing a favorite game over and over, your child will have fond memories of their special holiday.
