How To Preserve Your Adoption Trip

Your trip to adopt your child will be an enormously emotional time that you will remember forever. Here are some ideas to help you remember your entire adventure. Not only do these ideas make for great scrapbooking, but they will help to teach your child about their country and their adoption:

  • Bring a camcorder! We bought one off of ebay specifically for our trip and I am so glad that we did. We were able to record the entire trip to Ella’s baby center, them opening the gates for us and us meeting her! We also have pictures of that awesome day, but to be able to see how the nannies move and to hear them speak is absolutely amazing and I’m sure that will be very important to her one day.

  • Take business cards from everywhere that you eat, shop, etc. Not only will these help to jog your memory when you get home, but if you ever go back to Viet Nam, you’ll know some places to go.

Throw a notepad and pen in your diaper bag, so if a thought or idea hits you, you can jot it down quickly.

  • Hang on to any pamphlets, brochures, flyers, receipts etc. that you receive in Viet Nam. They may not seem too exciting at the time, but they will bring back such wonderful memories.

  • Keep your plane tickets. It’s wonderful to be able to see the 2 tickets that came to Viet Nam and the 3 that left!

  • It seems silly to remind you to bring a camera, but I’m going to anyway – it’s that important! If you have a digital camera, be sure that you bring a large memory card or your computer so you can upload your photos into the computer. If you’re not digital, bring much more film than you think you will need. You can purchase film in country, but it’s nice to know that you already have it for all those photo opportunities that you’ll encounter.

  • Buy a newspaper or magazine during your time in country. Whether or not you can read it is beside the point; your child may be very interested in the pictures and language when they get a little older.

The journal is great - I hauled one to China and wrote in it several times a day. I would jot down restaurant names, dates, and country info that the guides would spout out at random. Now that we've been home for a few months, I can look back at the small notebook and jog my memory of places and events!

hi mommyLis, I wish I had recorded more in my journal during our trip! It sounds like you have a wonderful keepsake to share with your child. I have entries from the beginning and end, but the middle just has a few notes about restaurants, shops, etc. but I'm still glad I have it :)

thanks for posting!
