How to Choose an Adoption Agency (Viet Nam specific)
Continued from Part One
Decide just how much hand holding you would like. Personally, I wanted a great deal of support through the entire process, and chose an agency that offered that. Some agencies (mine included) arrange your travel, submit your dossier and assist you the entire time in country. There are others who leave a lot up to you to figure out on your own. Be sure to find out exactly what the agency assists you with.
I wrote about humanitarian work and ethical practices in part one, but strongly feel they deserve a second mention. An ethical agency will be knowledgeable about the children that arrive or are brought to their centers. They will be able to tell you why/how children are relinquished or abandoned and what efforts are made to ensure that the relinquishments are legal and abandonment cases legit.

When I was choosing an agency I made my first list based on whether or not an agency had continued support to Viet Nam during the shutdown of adoptions to the US. The ones who continued their humanitarian aid and continued to support the children in their centers were the ones who made my list. It was very important to me to work with an agency that genuinely cared about the Viet Nam and its people; not just about making a profit doing adoptions. If this is important to you, please ask your potential agency about their humanitarian work and how they feel about unethical adoption practices.
Be sure that you feel comfortable with the agency’s staff. You are going to have a long, emotional connection to these people and it is important that you are comfortable in your relationship with them.
