It can be extremely easy to over-pack when flying to another continent for a two to three week stay. Many parents to be worry that they will not be able to find the essentials for themselves and their new child(ren,) so they literally pack everything but the kitchen sink. We over-packed in a few area; Ella’s clothes and food and snacks for us. Here are some tips to avoid over-packing:

  • Find out about your hotel’s laundry service. Ours was excellent and affordable. We could have gotten by with half the amount of clothing we brought. Actually, my husband brought about the right number of items, but I packed way too much for myself and Ella. Lightweight, easy care items that launder well are ideal. One of the other moms in our travel group had a few dresses that were similar to this one. They were great because she could wash them in her bathroom sink, they would dry super fast and were appropriate and cool for walking around town as well as official appointments.

Fill a suitcase with baby center donations that you’ll be able to fill with souvenirs and purchases that you make in country to bring back home. This picture shows a suitcase within a suitcase, which is something that we did on the way home after we were left with so much space after our donations and food stuffs were gone. But there is definitely no need to bring extra luggage with you “just in case.” If you find yourself needing a new piece of luggage while in Viet Nam, you can easily purchase a suitcase at a very good price.

  • Talk to other families that have recently traveled with your agency to find out what essentials they recommend bringing. Ask them where the nearest grocery/convenience stores are to your hotel so you’ll have the security of knowing where to go before your get your bearings.

I was very surprised by the accessibility in Hanoi and the ability to find just about everything we could need for a three week stay. You in country agency staff should be able to direct you to the best stores and recommend where to purchase certain items. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
